Titanium aluminides
In this study, materials based on titanium aluminides were prepared by varying the percentage of aluminium (Al), thus obtaining theTi3Al, TiAl and Ti-56Al alloys. In this context, the nanoindentation technique was applied in order to investigate the elastic modulus (E) and hardness (H) of both alloys. The experimental tests were carried out at room temperature to determine the mechanical properties of the materials. The measured values of elastic modulus for the Ti3Al, TiAl (T-54at%Al) and T-56Al (T-56at%Al) samples were E=176.9±4GPa, E=218.5±3,1GPa and E=230.6±9,1GPa, respectively; while the values of hardness for the Ti3Al, TiAl and T-56Al samples were H=9.12±0,5GPa, H=11.0±0,5GPa and H=8.6±0,6GPa, respectively. The structure of materials was investigated using optical microscopy and X-ray diffraction. As-cast fully lamellar structure was showed in Ti3Al alloys, typical dendritic microstructure was observed for the TiAl sample while in the Ti-56Al sample dendritic structure disappears. Furthermore, diffraction patterns indicated the presence of a duplex microstructure.
