Block copolymers
Thin films
Block copolymers based on polymethyl methacrylate and polystyrene (PMMA-b-PS) were synthesized via RAFT polymerization. A post-sulfonation reaction was carried out into the styrenic segments with the aim of introduce proton conductivity properties in the copolymer. Several polymerization degrees and volume fraction of each component were successfully synthetized in order to achieve different morphologies such as spherical, cylindrical and/or hexagonal among others. SEC analysis corroborates almost monodisperse nature of the synthesized blocks. Sulfonation degree (DS) was quantified by elemental analysis and the position of the sulfonic acid group was corroborated by FTIR and HNMR characterization. Thin films of the block copolymers before and after sulfonation were prepared by spin-coating technique; the films were exposed to solvent vapor and thermal annealing in order to reach equilibrium morphologies and AFM characterization showed that highly sulfonated samples (87 and 90% of DS) display partially ordered structures even without any SVA or TA typically required for the block copolymer systems in order to achieve ordered structures for these systems.
