Nowadays, industries producing steel parts by powder metallurgy (PM) have expanded faster than those using the conventional process. This is due to the PM oustanding advantages such as the fabrication of high quality parts with almost any geometry, strict dimensional tolerances, energy savings and lower production costs. However, despite these advantages, their applications could be limited under corrosive environments i. e. special care shoul be taken against corrosion. Better properties of the sintered products can be obtained when the sintering process is carried out in liquid phase, which can lead to higher densification, and this can be achieved by boron addition to the stainless steel powders. The aim of this work was to evaluate the corrosion behavior of a sintered 409Nb stainless steel with different boron contents (0.8%wt, 1.0%wt, and 1.2 %wt), exposed to two test solutions i.e. 0.5M H2SO4 and 0.5M NaCl. Thus, various electrochemical techniques such as linear polarization resistance (LPR), potentiodynamic polarization curves (PPC) and electrochemical noise (EN), were used. The results gave evidence that the samples without boron additions exposed to the NaCl solution disclosed similar behavior as compared with that of samples produced by conventional casting. However, the samples with boron additions had higher corrosion rates irrespective of the solution used. On the whole, an at least for the conditions of the present work, the addition of boron is harmful to corrosion resistance of a 409Nb stainless steel produced by powder metallurgy.
