Abstract The evaluation of the results was carried out through a comparison between two types of composites: Kraft lignin (LK)/poly (lactic acid) (PLA), and lignin from aquatic lily (LL)/PLA at different concentrations (0.1, 0.5 and 1 wt%) obtained by melt compounding in a mixing chamber at 190°C. The morphological and water uptake changed from one lignin to another, mechanical and thermal properties as well as absorbance tests of composites were evaluated before and after accelerated weathering. The addition of lignin to PLA matrix lowered the thermal stability of the compound. After accelerated weathering, tensile strength of the samples decreased, but to a lesser extent compared to the formulations of LL/PLA. The obtained results offer an advance for the development of fully biodegradable compounds with high percentages of lignin in PLA matrix applied in the production of food packaging.
